Stairway Cinema by OH.NO.SUMO
A design by OH.NO.SUMO have tucked a miniature cinema into the steps of a building on a busy street between bus stops and laundromats in Auckland, New Zealand. Design inspired by the lack of social interaction on the busy street.
A timber frame covered with three layers of fabric that provide a waterproof exterior, a dappled light effect and a soft interior.
The bright red fabric layers made an attractive point within the road, create a contrast between the existing brickwall. The installation succesfully express the excitement of the miniature cinema within the existing road site.
Bus stops and laundromats create a dispersed
hard-scape that results in numerous instances
of poor quality waiting, while simultaneously
failing to provide quality space for social
interaction. Members of the public retreat
individually into the media offered on their
mobile phones.
The installation of stairway cinema give local a
curiousity to attract passenger to get into the
stairway which give the local community a good
impact of social activity.
Stairway Cinema uses architecture as a way of engaging in a expression about curatorial practice, opportunistic urbanism and the role of architects as place-makers and provocateurs.
A community must be linked not only virtually
but also physically.

Expressionism:
In short, architecture is a result of expressionism. The designer will express something in a way that people will understand what are their intentions. I would talk on architecture installation, the Cloudscapes in Venice,Italy by Tetsuo
Kondo Architects incorporated with German climate engineering firm Transsolar. The point of expressionism here is to expresss the poetic nature of clouds. I think the architect wants to emphasize that Clouds are important elements of our atsmosphere, which frame outdoor space and block as well as filter sunlight.
Brief of task: As a group, each member is required to find research/ evidence/ photographs/ drawings/ audio/ video on ONE of the topics that you were asked to discuss in length today.
Idea:
His idea of Cloudscapes is very wonderful that most of us have a dream of flying through and touching the clouds. However, the Cloudscapes has actually make our imagination to turn into reality. The scapes above ground allows people to touch, walk through, and even sit above the man-made cloud in the Arsenale.
The man-made cloud is actually roughly 100% humidity created by a set of Martin Professional Smoke machines, carefully controlled so that the vapour is less dense enough to float in the air. They keep up with the basic knowledge of saturating air, condense droplets to make it float in the space.
Reference Video:
For further visualisation, regarding on the three layers of climate, please watch the video below:
Effort of Expressionism:
A curvy installation of 4.3 meter high ramp, allowing visitors to experience the feeling of touching clouds. Viewers could walk up and down. This meandering pathway actually designed to break the entire space into distinctive three layers that represents different layer of climates(refer to diagram below): on the ground level, the air is cool and dry, while half way up the ramps among the clouds where the air getting warm and humid. When you reach the top part of ramp which is above cloud layer, the air is hot but very low humidity. The engineers try to replace differences in pressure and temperature gradients to create such a unique atmosphere with different qualities of light.
Structure & Mechanical:
The inclined ramp is actually rested on the preexisting columns of the building. The fog or clouds that they created from the machine was released through the corner of the room.
Communal Space:
Of course, the Architect does not forget about communal space where visitors can spend more time. Seatings with extremely low seating height is designed.
Review & Crtique:
In my personal opinion, Tetsuo Kondo Architect has actually very successful in creating architecture that could evoke emotions of users or visitors. Visitors could actually evoke happiness, calm, peace and even liveliness when they climb higher and higher, but they might as well experience the feeling of everything getting back to normal as they decline the ramp. I think the architect tries to express the way of life where there is certain time you can go beyond but after certain period you need to get back to reality life. In conclusion, this is a minimal space which people can experience expressionism of their own and even of the designer.

Perched above a mountain cataract on a rocky hillside deep in the rugged
forest of Southwestern Pennsylvania, There is this building designed by
Frank Lloyd Wright, The Falling Water. Wright’s concept is to enchant the
relationship between man, nature and architecture.
The expression that The Falling Water gave me is to feel calm. The sound
of surrounding nature and water streaming below the building gave peace
to the inner soul of a person. Wright design is based on Japanese
architectural which is to bond relationship between man and nature.
Which is suitable with the site context of The Falling Water.

Case studies :
c) Building without any rooftop activities compare to Villa Savoye's rooftop garden.
Case studies :
b) compact living room with less sense of space compare to Villa Savoye with free floor plan and no partition wall.
Why do i feel comfortable and luxury....
Case Studies :
a) a building with small window with minimum sun light and ventilation compare to Villa Savoye which has long horinzontal window.
From the picture, trying to imagine yourself walking inside the building. Once inside the building, there was a big living room with full glass panel on the surrounding wall. No partition wall, all furniture was placing freely. Therefore, we couldn’t just walk freely without any sense of compact and the main point is to experience the sense of space. Next, the long window design, it allowing maximum of sun light penetrate inside the building. It show how important nature and building work together. Last but not least, the roof top garden, there was a ramp connected from the level to the roof top garden which requires the inhabitant to slow down and experience the movement between spaces.
Lastly, this building truly given me a lot of emotion and expression, I really hope one day I would have the chance to visit this building by my own. I want to feel it myself what sort of sense of space that Le Corbusier wanted to give to himself and human.
What sort of emotion and expression to me from this building? I would like to say that comfortable and luxury. I remember there was a famous quote from Le Corbusier which is “The house is a machine for living.” Every part of the design inside was depending on the scale of need of the human rather than just only design for qualities or advance in that field.
-
The very first point is the pillars. They elevating the building from the earth and allowed an extended continuity of the garden beneath.
-
Second point, during the era, nobody design their roof as a functional place. However, in Villa Savoye, the roof serves as a garden and terrace, showing the relationship between the nature and the building.
-
Third point, “free floor plan”, which means the whole building load, is supported by the bearing wall, allowing the wall to be placed freely.
-
Fourth point, long horizontal windows. Allowing natural ventilation and sunlight penetrate in and also one of the modern architecture style.
-
Fifth point, freely-design wall façade, serving only as a skin of the wall and windows.

The architecture building that I choose for this lecture is Villa Savoye, which was built by Le Corbusier in year 1931.
Le Corbusier was a well-known father of modern architect in the world of architecture. He got a lot of massive design and this one (Villa Savoye) really catch my attention.
Villa Savoye was fully built by using reinforce concrete. And why does it make this building so famous? The Villa Savoye is probably Corbusier's best known building from the year 1931, and it had enormous influence on international modernism. It was designed addressing his emblematic "Five Points", the basic tenets in his new architectural aesthetic.
Architectural Building
In our technological age, building became lifeless as it was to be. Many
have tend to forget that architectural design can effect the emotions of
people. Nowadays most people tend to cut the design idea by just using
‘skinning method’ while the main idea of the art is ignored.
As for the material wise, Wright’s did not overwhelm the technology like fancy glass facade.
In the other hand, he fully utilize the
surrounding context to use his building
material. Such as stone, limestone, untreated
natural stone located right on the building.
That give the emotion of how
the building respect the nature even more.
The interior design, narrow passageway and low ceiling gave the feeling of secured. Beside that, the low ceiling also
gave direct sight to the nature from a man height which bond the building and nature together from the interior part. The similar building that i found have the same ‘Natural Sight’ from the interior is Farnsworth House. Apart from looking natural with context from the outside. The emotion from the person from the interior play very important role to
create such close expression toward the mother green. But in the other hand, The Farnsworth house is designed to
exposed mostly of the interior to the exterior while Falling Water gave a specific point of view from a single person
height.
Apart from being careful design from the inside . The structure itself also
designed to fit with the context of the site. Which is the masonry form of
the building. The exterior of the building designed by horizontal pattern
with bricks and long terraces. Which also expresses the feeling of being
as a part of the natural view which is the leveling of the contour.

Lastly as for the saying, ‘The house was meant to compliment its site while still competing with the drama of the falls and
their endless sounds of crashing water. The power of the falls is always felt, not visually but through sound, as the
breaking water could constantly be heard throughout the entire house.’ The sound of the waterfall which are the main
point of the entire project designed by Wright for the client which own the river and waterfall. It gave the true feeling of
being calm from the inner part of the soul. I really hope one day to spend a night to experience the natural sound of falling water and being with the nature.

Expression, feelings or thoughts can be express through alot of ways. Movies, pictures, music, sculptures, paintings and more artistic ways. Painting art is one of the most common way from the olden days till now. Most of the artist are very emotional people, then they can feel and express their emotion easily. People nowadays use painting to give impact to the world and arts containing message. But not all only expensive arts and arts create by famous people give impact to the world or society. Sometime, graffiti art are not vandalism, it carries a lot of messages trying to convey to the society.
These are all the street arts by Banksy an English-based artist.
The kid crying for not getting likes, friends, and acknowledgement on the social media. The message of the art is telling the current generation children do not have a childhood, they only spend their time on the flat screen and care about their social media, friends and likes, but in reality they do not have any friends or does not talk to any of them. Another one both couple hugging each other but also care about the phone all day. Third one show the gay rights, if police were gay then who were there to arrest or stop them?
Finally from what i understand from the art is even though how though or how fierce and soldier may be on the battle field, but when they meet the children, it turns oppositely that they can be control by the children, because they are feel sorry to hurt them or showing the violence. So no matter how hard soldier is on the battlefield, they still have a soft side.
These are all the modern street art, trying to give an impact message to what the society think, make the realize the unrealized. Lastly try to make a change.
