What have you learnt this semester that has changed your perspective?
Firstly, talking on Ideal space to place, for instance, ‘on the way’ space is what normally we have in everyday life. The idea of exploring this on-the-way space is to relate the factors and theories of how every designers could transform a meaningless space to a memory space. Before this, I would see bus station, staircase, pedestrian as very boring places. However, I would never think that all these spaces are very potential to evoke memory to the users. From this topic, basically let me clearly differentiate the term of space and place. By understanding space is one-dimensional and is only a physical location; however, place is subjective and created when emotional connections, physical attributes and different perceptions are combined. In short, it has changed my perspective to express ideas to a single space by looking deep into the setting for a multitude of different places depening on how it is used, read and perceived.
Followed by expressing emotions, feels towards a place, human five senses could actually come into mind. Ms Sue had given a lot of visual and verbal reference of senses from Daniel Libeskin Jewish museum design, TED talk by Jinsop Lee. To me, I would normally visualize quality of space to dominate my perception towards a building. However, artists like architects have tried to integrate every senses to experiential qualities in their architecture. Those designers have given me alot of innovative ideas to express integrating 5 senses to propose design concepts. This is one of the case study by Ms Sue where smell has associated with reminiscence in The Art of Scent in New York City. Implementing fragrance as an artistic medium for a museum is very creative and more distinctive than others. From this point of view, designing a building is not only to be creative. Be innovative is somehow important that your design shows its own uniqueness. I have learnt how to express different human senses in studio museum design project, to let visitors feel the way leprosy patients have felt all the while.
However, innovation sometimes come from inspiration. I totally agree with the statement, ‘Inspiration is everywhere’. An architect is trained to think in artistic way. Whatever inspires you, can always be possible to turn into your building design one day. Only having inspiration is not enough, you need to have limitless imagination to bring expression to your building. It is pretty amazing to look at Elenberg Fraser's Design for Melbourne Tower that was inspired by Beyonce's dancing curve. This reminds us again that architecture inspiration is not only from architecture building, can be anywhere else you can see. Even in other way round, architecture can inspire fashion or vice versa.
Relating back to expressionism in building design, how architecture can be expressed through movie filming. This topic is one of the hardest one to tackle, however, it had greatly changed my perspective towards movie filming. Before I met Ms Sue, I had never realize the importance of expressing architecture in movie filming. Not only amazed by the effects in Star Wars movie, but we should really look into the effort of spending time to draft out drawings and build modular spaceships for movie filming. From film critique, I have realized even minor details of background movie setting can affect viewers to feel emotionally sensitive. Of course, the cast design of characters will always be the main key to express story well.
Looking back to all related topics discussed above, community architecture is a new topic to me. Few architects might choose to collaborate with non-profit entities which benefits the community that needs them. Returning back what you earn to the community is a way of doing good. However, today, I had totally changed my perception on community project. It is much more difficult than a tendered project. Before gathering volunteers, someone might be architects needs to raise fund or find sponsors to kick start a project. Architects might as well face issue to guide unskilful volunteers which might slow down construction progress. However, community architecture has made a significant change of how people shower their love to the need ones. Community architecture is very simple to give basic help and consultation without priority of profit.
From the very first week of theories class, towards the end of the semester, I found out that almost every students have changed their perspective very naturally. Ms Sue has taught us a very different way of approach in architecture through different case study as well as public talks like PAM talk and TED talk. Students will not probably attend those talks actively if Ms Sue did not make it as part of our courseworks. However, outcome from learning theories is very impressive and even out of my expectation. Realizing I have gained great ability to apply essential knowledge from different designers and express ideas in any method to propose design concept and solutions.

What have you learnt this semester (in theories) that has changed your perspective.
A blink of eyes, and now this is the last blog I am going to write. Time flies.
Can’t deny that I truly learnt a lot of new things and knowledge’s throughout the theories classes. Firstly, I would like to say is the critical thinking of design idea. Before that, I used to stuck and jam in the stage of doing conceptual and think of the idea. I think right now I got different direction to think about the ideas after the few classes of theories and as well as the talks I went. I truly got a lot of inspiration and direction from them. One of the classes which really gave me a lot of idea and impression was about the 5 senses. After the classes, I went back home and think for the whole night, it actually would be good and nice if I apply all these senses to my design. Why I never think of which happened in our life every day.
Secondly, I really thankful to the lecturer who put so much effort to make us concentrate and focus during her class by giving sudden test halfway of the class. Because of this, I found out that I actually quite interesting in the old building when compare to the architecture nowadays. Flash back to the classes about the old and new architecture, I actually study about the old building which is Villa Savoye, Le Corbusier. From that, I found out that the building during the past was simple, but the overall looking really impressive and some of them were still good looking compare to some architecture building nowadays which is so much on advertising and commercial.
Last but not least, after some classes, I knew a lot of architects and I started to read about their philosophy which I didn’t really do before that. After some studying, I never know when I go deep to their story and philosophy or their design will give me another perspective view of architecture. Like an example, I remember one of the quotes from Daniel Libeskind, architecture must be features, if not engineering can do for us. Just a few words but having a big meaning.

What have you learnt this semester (in theories) that has changed your perspective.
I want to talk about the perspective before and after I joining the class. Before the class , I have a limitation of thinking on exploring our design. In the class , there a lot of example of design thinking which throughout different field or era of designer's thinking. From ideal spaces ,film story line ,old and new architecture , community architecutre and human senses. These studies helped me on explore toward the critical thinking of architecture not only about functionality or expression but to creating own unique solution from the studied designer's philosophy.
For example in the class about old and new architecture
,the evolution of architecture in history to present
architecture gave me knowledge about the approach of
architecture in different era. From a simple venicular
design to present various style of architecture impressed
me throughout the whole architecture approaches due
affect of human need, expression of power or religious
and human comfort and sustainability. Im impressed
by the design's philopsophy and innovation of design
method during past to present.
From few lecture that shared from the PAM talk in Publika , KL. I can learn the architectural idea from different architect's philosophy from different places. The lectures convey different message of idea through different approaches in their perspective toward architecture. One of message that influenced my perspective through architecture is from Prof.Bart Lootsma which is the aspect between nature , human and machine to create a masterpiece.
Throughout the theories classes's slide , task and discussion have a different way to learn just because of adding more interaction within the classes. The class helped us to be more focus and concentrated in the classes. The theories class gave me knowledge in diversity of architectural philosophy and approaches. Let me be more appreciate to the architectural work and built environment. Built up my passion to design and be innovative in architecture.

Well, this will be the last blog I’ll update for this semester. Last but no least, what i have learn in this course is that being we should have tackle the issue we face today whether as an architect or any somebody which we will become in the future.
I realized that, today we human has entered into a whole new era. Which are the internet world. We Googled stuff we want to know, research online for the quality of the stuff. We start believing thing people post online. Reading online website articles instead of newspaper. Socializing through facebook instead of hanging out
in a place.
What i realize now, people tend to be more in space rather than place. Because their place has become
digitalize. People starve for likes rather than claps.
What I found out here, although we cant change the world but we can solve the little issue we face today or
to involved / to make use out of the advantages today.
I remember one of the lesson which is ‘ What type of architecture today ’ I truly believe that this method,
Branding Architecture would have change the world. People tend to see the advertising rather than listen the progress of the concept or explaining about the space. People wanted to see exciting graphic, video, music
about the project. We people tend to avoid listen the speech over and over again. Looking same architectural style, unmovable floor plans, old manual sketches about the concept. We want to see how things get special
through today technologies.
It’s may seem weird, but I truly inspired by the Iron Man movie. The technologies. Spreading story via digital messages. Through the smart phones we can share the story to the public. Movable 3d laser screen object.
We wanted something extraordinarily.
What I hope is to learn more about digital than manual.
