What i wanted to bring out is, the objective of human that both era. In ancient time, people create great architecture

to pray their God. In the other hand of the era, people create to achieve their building needs. But what about today ? We faces alot of issue about global warming. Rubbish is growing rapidly. Weather is changing unpredictablely.

Earthquake or tsunami.

Q:Every student is required to explore 1 distinctive change between     old architecture design and with what we have in the present.

Architecture create by design and build place that reflect functional , social , atmosphere and also aesthetic consideration. What I think elements in architecture have a distinctive change between old architecture and present is the building envelope.  Building envelopes is an important aspect in architecture to achieve human comfort , environmental ,sustainability and aesthetic expression. As human flourished, construction materials andtechniques developed building envelope from mud to glass panels, basic needs to aesthetic approach.

For exploration toward this aspects, its take few case study to show the evolution of building facade throughout the history which from vernicular design to modern design.

Vernicular design

Vernicular design are a design with basic local material to form a space to isolate them from climate and wildlife which lack of aesthetic consideration. The envelope of vernicular design basically reflect the basic demand and resources in the past.
In Malaysia vernicular design there are only local timber as envelope and opening to achieve human comfort with simple ornamentation to reflect religious believes.

Medieval architecture design

In Medieval architecture design human started to develops new community , construction and also material.  Where building envelope start to reflect the religion , power and also new construction. This is where ornamentation and proportion of building envelops are started to develop. Human started to express their power and religion into aesthetic on building envelops.

Industrial revolution architecture

Industrial revolution gave the biggest impact to the architecture and construction on 19th century where mass-production of iron and later steel in quantities and machinary where it became an economically plausible building material. Industrial Revolution develops new method and material of constuction also give huge possibility in building envelope construction. As the new methods come in, the building like tall office tower and urban lots and also the skyscraper. One of the famous construction system introduced during 19th century is the curtain wall system made out of lightweight material.

“Present” architecture

Due to global warming and green house effect, architecture are not only design building but also the environment. Nowadays, building envelopes are more emphasize of functionality and sustainability. Main approach of designing a building envelopes is to achieve both aesthetic and ecologically sustainable.

To achieve these ecological performance , green material or low energy material are mainly used in construction nowaday.

From my point of view , the basic approach from the old architecture design and present architecture are the same which is to fulfill physic and mental comfort of human. From the Medieval period , human start to develop their own architecture by expressing their power  and religious. Nowaday is to maintain and improve the surrounding environment. I can see the evolution of building envelope is evolving by different period , different architectural approach and create different architecture design.

Architecture, some say it's just a building, some say it's an art. Architecture is the king of design and art, u can see it, touch it, taste it, and feel it with all the senses. So what's the difference between old architecture design and with what we have in the present.

We can see there is a lot of difference between the building in our surrounding compared to olden days. Example the form of the building, the material and technology used to erect the building, that can easily differentiate whether it is a old or new building. But those are just the surface of design. what's the essence of design is the soul of the building. Comparing the Masters of architect, example Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis.i.kahn,  Miers, le Corb and more to Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Bjarke Ingels , etc. We've learnt from history that these master of architects design talk mostly about feelings, very abstract and deep thought. Even though the form of the buildings are just simple but the content of the buildings are abstracted with souls. When you're in the building you feel the soul of the space.

Example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Johnson Wax building, his idea was to create like a forest in the building, so the employee doesn't not feel stressed like a normal office. The column of the building is like a tree supporting the roof and the lights reflecting out from the structure, hence creating like a sky light instead of artificial lighting. Wright even designed the furniture for the building. But if u look at the outside, it's just comprising of cuboid with curve edges.

Now, let's see the building of current design. Norman foster are more structural forms, Zaha hadid designed the wildest form of the future style, Frank Gehry got the form by crashing paper , bjarke ingels treat it like lego or minecraft. From all the examples, they have one similarity which is the form of the building. They care more of the forms of the building rather than the feelings. Creating iconic forms on site, but not much about the feeling of the space. The technology do affect the change of architecture, technology allows them to create more forms of a building, but that doesn't mean it's bad design, it is just how people perceive building design nowadays.

From my own opinion, creating architecture with souls and feelings is better than creating the exterior forms, because form may just be for the visual impact, but the souls of the building represent the building more. Finally the technology also affect the way of people design.

Every student is required to explore 1 distinctive change between old architecture design and with what we have in the present.

All buildings have its own art and craft, whether it is modern or old, people that usually will define them. Modern and old architecture have distinctive change of materials used in construction due to advance technology that we have today. Until the last century that glass and steel became common. Modern architecture is usually made of simple and flat designs. Classical buildings usually have detail composition. Undeniably, we need to well-preserve historic architecture. Some older buildings may have features like window seats, art- glass windows or other architectural details. Some of the modern generations may like it, some may not.

In the past, we can see most of the pieces of architecture were built using earth, stone, brick, wood and bamboo. These materials allow moisture to be absorbed easily and then to evaporate away. We can say that those materials allow the building to ‘breathe’. Level of dampness in the building are controlled in this way. Of course when the evaporation of porous materials could be insufficient due to excessive dampness of building fabric. This is why traditional buildings were designed mostly relating to the local culture and climate in the past. Deep eaves, wide gutters and plinths at ground level are good details to sustain a building in its local climate. For example, Taliesin and Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright employed only local materials stone, brick and etc where his design always looked organic.

However, think of the materials now generally used, such as iron and concrete, used as they never were before. With all these materials chosen, modern buildings are built to be waterproof. After the Industrial Revolution takes place where increased movement of materials brought rapid changes in the methods of construction. In the late 19th century, switching from traditional materials and methods to those buildings at present with cavity walls and damp-proof courses built using cement mortars and renders. Focusing on modern building materials (hard dense bricks, cement based mortars and renders, modern masonry paints and external sealants) are generally impermeable and rely on impervious barriers, such as cavity walls and cement renders that keep out driving rain and act as damp-proof courses to prevent dampness. The modern materials and methods work well together in modern buildings design. The method and materials have been the most conventional way in building construction.

When comes to thinking of preserving historic architecture, mixing technologies issue may rise. If impervious modern materials are used on a traditional building there is a big risk that balance between water entering fabric and water evaporating from it will be disturbed. Consequently, traditional performance will be weaker - such as dampness and decay -- will occur. However, the issue of dampness will be the major consideration of modern people to just take the whole historic building off the ground and build new one instead. This is not a way to challenge architecture.

Generally speaking, even people who does not understand architecture well could tell the distinctive change of classical architecture to modern architecture. We will not usually see a glass and steel structure with Roman columns. Modern architecture was a celebration of technology - steel, glass and iron were not available back then. So the era of modernism came in when people discover new technology and materials. Whether the distinctive change between old and new architecture gives impact to the earth today, people are the one who could control the Old as the New Green.

Every student is required to explore 1 distinctive change between old architecture design and with what we have in the present.

The old architecture objectives VS the new architecture objectives

Since the ancient time, where in Ancient Egypt and other early societies, people

believed in the omnipotence of Gods Zues. Architecture has already began to have it’s own objective. People create place to pray to their GodsRoman, Egypt, Greek Persian and many more, they all designed the greatest architecture that last until

today. Where human still go there to visit the great architecture.

In some places, which not in that era. Human tend to design the building

accordingly to their needs. And also their site location properties. For example, for the south asia people design their house to have a great air ventilation and raised from the ground to avoid dangerous animal from entering their house. Or the

north pole, people designed their house to avoid hot air from escaping to the

surrounding by making igloo.

Nowadays, architects are required to consider about the new objectives to make the world a better place to live. Architects are the doctors of the earth environment. They have to

think about the new problem. For examples, instead of

avoid the solar heat. Architects shall not solve it with adding the cooling system which will inflict more heat to the environment. A good example i found is the green architecture.

WOHA. They applied the green technologies to the building. Cooling down most of the heat without harming the earth.

For the disaster part. Architect and engineer made out a solution that the building will withstand the problem face. For example, the earthquake resistant tower. The Burj Khalifah tower or Taipei 101 tower. Using high tech technologies such as pendulum ball or cross intersection frame to support the building from being destroy.

Lastly i think that the new objective comparing the old and new architecture is that, the material. The ancient era people

used only mud brick to create those Ziggurats. While today people tend to use those material that could harvest green

energy such as the solar panels, the windmills or even water pressure turbine to archive the green energy saving

objectives.

As the conclusion from this blog. I would say that, architect design changed accordingly to the world needs

''The old architect design to maximize their prayers need while today architect tries to reduce the harm inflict to the mother earth.''

“Old vs new”

Base on my understanding and study, I found out that there are quite a lot of differences between old architecture and modern architecture. Base on my study, ancient architecture mainly based on form and function whereas modern architecture is based on function only. We can just differentiate the times of building by just looking outside from the building based on their structure and appearance.  Other than that, traditional architecture are more durable, more culturally and environmentally sustainable, more beautiful, and (in the long run) more economical than modern architecture which more focus on the façade in order to make the building as iconic or landmark in the certain place. Architect at old times design building based on the demanding and need from the people while current architect they mostly design based on the aesthetic which to make them famous quickly. During the old times, mostly the building would bring a big impact to the environment as well as the others architect that is why people always said the previous architect design with soul. It is not saying the current architect not good, but there are really a little difference between now and then.

I would like to compare between Le Corbusier and Zaha Hadid. Le Corbusier, my all time favourite, who works are truly magnificient because he designed them based on the need of people. He also once been called as the first modern architecture father. “a house is a machine of living in” a quote from Le Corbusier. Villa Savoye, a modern architecture house designed by him. Every measurement and space were according the scale of need of human. It has a simple form, simple material  and simple façade but the living need is massive. From here, we can see that the soul from him and the impact he wanted to bring to all human and world.

While Zaha Hadid, she is famous because of her buildings are distinctively neofuturistic, characterised by the "powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures" with "multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life" . everyone is calling her genius because of his amazing works, for me, I truly give her my respectation, but in terms of scale of need, im still prefer the acient architect. But cannot deny that zaha hadid works are really amazing and change the impossible to possible.  Heydar Aliyev cultural centre, one of a best works from her, we can see that it mainly focus on the form and appearance. She designed with uneven form and curvy structure, which make the building as a landmark in that area. Besides that, compare to old times architecture, modern architecture mainly play with the façade envelop.
